Rig Explosion Gulf of Mexico: Still reeling from the devastation caused by the explosion of BP's Deepwater Horizon rig, a report from WWL-TV in New Orleans has confirmed that the Coast Guard is responding to another rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico.
The news is the latest scare for the Gulf region involving offshore oil rigs.
One person is missing after a rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico, about 80 miles south of Vermilion Bay, the U.S. Coast Guard said.
Meanwhile, in Greenland (hat tip: reader Lynn S.), eco-radicals are obstructing oil rig operations and threatening more:
The activists first scaled the oil rig Stena Don on Tuesday.
Right now, details are scant, but apparently there was some kind of explosion at another oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico and Coast Guard and other rescue helicopters and craft are on route to a rig located south of Vermillion Bay.
Reports seem to indicate that rig workers were in the water but were accounted for. The platform involved is called Vermillion 398, and owned by Mariner Energy.
UPDATE:
The platform is located in 377 2,500 340 feet of water.
The explosion sparked a fire aboard the oil rig, owned by Mariner Energy. It occurred west of the site of the April blast that caused the massive BP oil spill.
The Coast Guard said initial reports indicated all 13 crew members from the rig were in the water. The Department of Homeland Security said the platform, known as Vermilion Oil Platform 380, was owned by Mariner Energy of Houston. Company records show that the platform and rig is in 340 feet of water.
A Gulf of Mexico oil rig exploded Thursday morning, sending its crew of 13 scrambling into the water 92 miles off the coast of Louisiana, the Coast Guard said.
